Just for a day, California lawmakers put their regular workload aside, to make a frog leap. Yes! You read that right—making a real frog take a big leap. Inspired by Mark Twain's, 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County', all the assembly people including the staffers and the interns, gathered with their ever ready-to-jump frogs. While they all got together on the capitol lawn, they had a singular goal on their minds: leaping to victory!
All day, participants cheered and prodded their frogs to exhibit how far these little amphibians could go with a little word of encouragement. The first participant—State Senator, Tom Barryhill representing the district which includes the Calaveras County itself, motivated his frog to jump a good 5 feet 1 and 1/2 inches. However, the winner of the day was a Southern California Assembly lady, Cheryl Brown who named her frog after her chief of Staff, Larry Broussard. Ms. Brown managed to coax her frog to take the winning leap of 10 feet 11 inches. And paradoxically, in 2013 she had finished last. And this time around, the frog's big leap helped her to reverse the luck.
